About the Position and Department: The Museum Aide is under the direct supervision of the Curator. This is a thirty (30) hours per week seasonal position. The O’Fallon Museum offers a variety of exhibits, collections, and programs showcasing the history of our community.
Position Overview: This position assists with museum operations including preparation of exhibits and collections, preparation of objects for storage, greeting visitors, cleaning, general maintenance projects, and conducting tours.
Required Education and Experience: Must be a minimum of sixteen (16) years of age.
Preferred Education and Experience: Previous experience working within a museum setting and/or historical venue is preferred.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications: This position requires unsupervised contact with juveniles and/or elderly and is subject a pre-employment criminal background check.

Job Overview
This position assists with museum operations including preparation of exhibits and collections, preparation of objects for storage, greeting visitors, cleaning, general maintenance projects, and conducting tours.
The following essential functions are representative of typical work performed but are not necessarily limited to these specific tasks/areas.
Essential Functions
Customer Service – Greet visitors, answers questions about exhibits and collections. Conducts directed, interactive tours using knowledge of local history. Schedule individual and group tours. Engage in ongoing learning and research to ensure presentation of informed tours. Completes sales of memorabilia and trinkets in Gift Shop; handles monies including making change and prepares receipts. Write thank you cards in response to donations.
Assists and/or participates in various programming activities; this includes but is not limited to preparation of materials as well as interacting with participants of varying ages.
Collections – Assist in the setup, assembly, and preservation of collections in accordance with curatorial standards. May assist in the research and applicable interpretation of collections and donations. Create display labels and identification cards for collection displays by using museum specific software.
Cleaning and General Maintenance – Dust collections with care and consideration. Sweep and mop floors weekly in all buildings; cleans restrooms daily. May paint walls/rooms/display areas.

This position requires significant attention to detail in working in proximity with and setting up collections and exhibits. Ability to relate to a variety of ages, ranging from small children to elderly. Possess excellent customer service and interpersonal skills to resolve questions and concerns using sound judgment and discretion. Must listen actively to ensure effective and correct communication; able to interact with variety of personalities. Adapt to changing work routines and demands. Awareness of others’ reactions and ability to understand reactions.
Apply independent initiative, discretion, judgment, and organization skills to a variety of projects, assignments, and situations. Listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences. Communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand; explain rules and procedures clearly to the public. Requires the ability to communicate verbally. Ability to utilize computers and programs, including Internet, Word, and email. This position must function as part of a team, working for the betterment of the County, the Museum, and the public.
Safety
Safety is a primary duty and a personal responsibility. County employees are responsible for reading, understanding and following safety rules and procedures as identified within County Policy, our Safety Program as well as at each department/work location/JSA. This position is responsible for wearing PPE as identified in the JSA or when working in areas where there is danger of injury. Responsible for wearing suitable work clothes as determined by the Curator. Reports all injuries, hazards and/or near misses utilizing established reporting forms and procedures. Knows the location of first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and other safety devices. Attend all safety meetings including annual training. This position will not perform potentially hazardous tasks or use any hazardous material until properly trained.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment
This position performs work in and around the Museum and related buildings. Some program activities may occur at other locations in Baker.
Required Education and Experience
Must be a minimum of sixteen (16) years of age.

Enrollment in high school, college/university, graduate school, or trade school is preferred as is previous experience working within a museum setting and/or historical venue.

Compensation
The starting wage for this position is $15.00 per hour. Experienced and returning seasonal museum aides will be paid on the following schedule:
2nd Year: $16.50 per hour
3rd Year: $18.00 per hour

Position Type/Hours of Work
This seasonal position will work thirty (30) hours per week Memorial Day through (ideally) Labor Day; with flexibility to accommodate school and/or sports schedules. The actual schedule will include working weekdays as well as weekends. Work will generally occur between 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The needs of the Museum may result in additional hours.
Physical and Environmental Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk on uneven surfaces, sit, bend, and reach with hands and arms. May be required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. May be required to lift up to fifty (50) pounds. Specific vision abilities include close and distant vision.
